Education for all, leadership for good

The University of Sydney has been challenging traditions for over 170 years as Australia’s first University. Progressive thinking, breaking with convention, challenging the status quo, and improving the world around us is in our DNA. We make lives better by producing leaders of society and equipping our people with leadership qualities so they can serve our communities at every level.

How we’re contributing to a more sustainable future

The University is addressing some of the world’s most complex issues by putting sustainability at the heart of our campus operations, environments, and engagement activities. We placed seventh globally and first in Australia in the second edition of the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2024.

The University of Sydney Sustainability Strategy 2020 guides our commitment to a revitalised institutional focus on sustainability, outlining our ambitious targets for contributing to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals. The Strategy aims to deliver solutions to the interconnected problems facing our shared future by:

  • Enriching lives through research and education
  • Enabling resilient places and a responsible footprint
  • Empowering good governance and coordination
  • Caring for Country and embracing multiple knowledge systems
