The University of Hohenheim in southern Germany is Stuttgart’s oldest university. Founded in 1818 in response to devastating famines, the university has always combined excellent basic research with practical solutions to urgent societal challenges. Its three faculties – Agricultural Sciences, Natural Sciences (including biodiversity and food sciences), and Business, Economics and Social Sciences – form a unique profile for the approximately 8,000 students that make up the university’s student body. A common focus across all faculties is the bioeconomy: future-oriented economic systems based on renewable biological resources from plants, animals, and microorganisms, and on innovative, sustainable production processes. This interdisciplinary approach enables Hohenheim to help address global issues such as food security, climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable value chains in an integrated way.

Sustainability is deeply rooted in the university’s identity and reflected in its historic green campus in Stuttgart-Hohenheim, which serves as a living laboratory for biodiversity, land use, and climate adaptation. Hohenheim pursues a comprehensive sustainability strategy in research, teaching, and campus operations, supported by dedicated structures such as the Green Office, serving as a central hub for sustainability projects and student engagement.
