The University of Sydney has been challenging traditions for over 170 years as Australia’s first University. Progressive thinking, breaking with convention, challenging the status quo, and improving the world around us is in our DNA. We placed seventh globally and first in Australia in the second edition of the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2024.

The University of Sydney Sustainability Strategy 2020 guides our commitment to a revitalised institutional focus on sustainability, outlining our ambitious targets for contributing to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals. The Strategy aims to deliver solutions to the interconnected problems facing our shared future by:

The story of University of Tasmania (UTAS) began over 130 years ago, in a sandstone building overlooking Hobart in lutruwita/Tasmania. Since those early days, with three lecturers teaching eleven students, their purpose has remained the same. Through academic excellence, UTAS seeks to make their home and the world a better place.

At UTAS, success takes a certain determination and imagination. Located on an isolated island with a small population, Tasmania has always had to work differently. It’s what makes Tasmanians such creative thinkers and problem solvers, and generated powerful ideas both for and from the island.

Just as the winds and elements shaped this land, this land shapes everything UTAS focuses on. That’s why, today, UTAS works to protect the island through addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through teaching, research, operations and engagement activities. UTAS ranks #5 overall in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings and achieved #1 in SDG13 Climate Action in 2022 and 2023. They are also a STARS Gold rated university.

As a university, UTAS studies and preserves some of the last great wilderness on our planet. From Tasmanian shores, UTAS research extends to the great Southern Ocean and down to the Antarctic.

Here, everything is connected.

Literature students ponder the vast Southern Ocean. Scientists sing. Doctors design. Teachers become entrepreneurs. Architects devote themselves to sheltering the needy.

Their creative minds capture a unique land and seascapes, reminding us why Tasmania is worth fighting for. They tell stories that resonate far away.  UTAS leads in medical, agricultural, social and environmental research. Their small setting allows UTAS to test big ideas, leading to greater outcomes for the world.
